Paper Terms & Values

Acid-Free Paper
Paper manufactured without acid in the pulp, to prevent chemical deterioration. Acid-free paper keeps reports and manuscripts from turning yellow and brittle over time.

Bond Paper

Bond paper is a strong, durable paper especially suitable to electronic printing and use in office machines including copiers and desktop printers. Bond paper has a basic size of 17" x 22" and a basic weight of 13 to 24 lbs. It is characterized by erasability, good absorption, and rigidity.
Also Known As: reprographic paper, writing paper, xerographic paper. Almost any paper made to be used as stationery or in an office. It can range from inexpensive copier paper to 100% cotton stock.
Examples: Bond paper is typically used in copiers and for letterheads, business forms, and a variety of documents produced with inkjet and laser printers.

Brightness
The percentage of light the paper reflects. Most white papers measure between 60% and 90% brightness. Bright papers make your text and colors look cleaner and crisper.

Cotton Paper
Premium paper containing 25%-100% cotton fibers. It has excellent archival qualities.

Cover Stock
Heavyweight papers manufactured for covers and cards. Ideal for the outside covers of annual reports, brochures, catalogs, and handbooks as well as for business cards, postcards, and folders.

Die cutting
Using a metal-edged die or laser to cut shapes into paper. Die cutting may be used to create a decorative pattern or for functional needs such as making a cover window or pocket folder.

Dpi (Dots per Inch)
The number of dots that fit horizontally and vertically into a one-inch measure. Generally, the higher the dpi, the sharper the printed image.

Embossing
Using pressure and a metal die to create raised letters or designs on paper.

Felt Finish
A soft-textured surface that's ideal for special techniques such as embossing and foil stamping.

Fiber
Thread-like cellulose structures, generally from cotton or wood, that form a sheet of paper.

Finish
The surface quality of a sheet of paper. Popular text and cover finishes include smooth, vellum, felt, laid, and linen.

Foil Stamping
Metallic foil, in one of various colors, carried on a plastic sheet and transferred through a stamping process onto paper.

Gatefold
Two or more parallel folds on a sheet with the end flaps folding inward.

Inkjet Compatible
Paper designed to have excellent ink adherence, high scratch resistance, and high density for more vibrant colors.

Rag
Once a common material used in the papermaking process rag referred to the amount of cotton fiber relative to the other materials in the paper pulp. The term "rag content" is not used as much today because other materials are used instead.
